Growing Together:
As we grow together, each week we will practice a discipline together that will help our walk with Jesus. This week we are going to practice Lectio Divina together. Unlike analytical Bible study, which focuses on historical facts or theological arguments, Lectio Divina aims for personal transformation and communion with God.
Instruction for Lectio Divina: A Simple Way to Pray Scripture
1. Be still
Sit down. Silence your phone. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak. One sentence is enough: “Lord, I am here.”
2. Read
Read the passage slowly out loud.
Read it a second time.
Notice a word or phrase that stays with you. Do not hunt for a sermon. Receive what is given.
3. Reflect
Sit with that word.
What is God showing you about himself?
What is he showing you about you?
Where does this touch your real life this week?
4. Pray
Talk to God about what you noticed. Thank him. Confess. Ask. Keep it plain.
5. Rest
Stop talking. Stay with God for a minute. You do not have to fix anything. Let the Word hold you.
6. Live
Carry one sentence into the week. If you are in a group, share that one sentence.
Verse for Lectio Divina this week: Matthew 5:1-10
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. He said:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Questions:
We can’t live in our own power. But because we are humans, inevitably and sometimes without even noticing in the moment, we attempt to do so. What ways do you try living in your own power?
On Sunday, Jack talked about “the box.” What would you say “the box” is for you right now, that you currently struggle with in your own daily life? What limitations do we tend to impose on God? Are the expectations that we place on God?
What are some ways that you are returning to God? What new and different habits will you implement? Will these habits help with the way we can limit God?
Re-read Matthew 5:1-10. As you read the “beatitudes” why are they so very important to us, present day, in our current world?
In what ways are they a “Jesus Mirror” for us?
In what ways do you want to look more like Jesus in your daily life?
What goals and desires do God have for you? - Pray on that today and this coming week. Share with the group if you feel comfortable.
